Navigating Stress with Strength during Mental Health Awareness Month

Home » Our Blog » Navigating Stress with Strength during Mental Health Awareness Month

Stress affects everyone, especially those balancing work, family, and caregiving responsibilities. Stress is a natural response. It often builds quietly over time, and can have negative impacts on your health, energy levels, focus, and overall well-being. We are sharing this guide for managing stress and burnout in honor of National Mental Health Awareness month.

What exactly is stress, and why does it matter?

Stress is how the body responds to challenges or demands. A little stress can be motivating. But over long periods, too much stress can harm your health and well‑being.

Stress can impact:

  • Physical health, such as feeling tired, having headaches, or trouble sleeping
  • Emotional health, including irritability, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed
  • Thinking and focus, making it harder to make decisions
  • Work and daily activities, especially tasks that require sharp attention

Long‑term stress can increase the risk of health problems and reduce overall quality of life. Recognizing stress early makes it easier to manage.

How can I tell when stress is becoming burnout?

Stress turns into burnout when someone experiencing stress for a long time and does not get enough rest and support. According to the World Health Organization, burnout is characterized by three key signs:

  • Constant exhaustion or extreme tiredness
  • Feeling distant, negative, or disconnected from work
  • Not being able to keep up with daily responsibilities

Caregivers and other people who manage complex systems while caring for others may be especially at risk of burnout. It is important to catch these signs early, so that caregivers can seek support before their stress becomes overwhelming.

What can I do to help reduce or manage stress?

When the world is very stressful, stress management can seem impossible. However, you do not need to make big changes to manage stress. Small steps can make a big difference.

Some practical ways to manage day-to-day stress include:

  • Practice building your awareness. Notice what situations increase your stress. Understanding patterns helps us to respond calmly instead of reacting automatically.
  • Use grounding or breathing techniques. Slow breathing, stretching, or grounding exercises (such as paying attention to what you can see, touch, and hear) can help your body calm down during stressful moments.
  • Set boundaries. Boundaries can help protect your time and energy. This could mean taking breaks, turning off work notifications after hours, or setting realistic expectations.
  • Stay connected with your community. Support from friends, coworkers, family, or peers can reduce stress. Your care coordinator may also be able to help connect you to community resources and supports.
  • Be sure to rest. Getting enough sleep, drinking enough water, and exercising regularly all support stress management and recovery.

Stress is a normal part of life, but it does not have to take control of it. By recognizing stress, using simple daily to manage it, and looking out for signs of burnout, you can develop your resilience in stressful situations.
