Maryland’s Autism Waiver allows eligible children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder to receive waiver and Medicaid services to support them in their homes and community. The Coordinating Center is contracted by local school systems to provide case management for students enrolled in the Autism Waiver in Dorchester, Harford, Howard, Queen Anne’s and Worcester counties.
Population Served
The Autism Waiver is designed to serve children and young adults between the ages of one and 21 who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder as defined in the DSM 5 who meet the financial, technical, and medical eligibility requirements outlined below.
Covered Services
The following are community-based services funded through the Autism Waiver:
- Respite Care
- Environmental Accessibility Adaptations
- Family Consultation
- Intensive Individual Support Services
- Therapeutic Integration or Intensive Therapeutic Integration Services (after-school program that provides three-to-one (3:1) or one-to-one (1:1) staffing)
- Residential Habilitation (i.e., regular, intensive)
- Adult Life Planning
- Service Coordination
Eligibility
- Financial eligibility
Financial eligibility is based on the child/young adult`s income and resources. The child/young adult’s combined assets may not exceed $2,000 or $2,500 per month (depending on eligibility category). - Technical eligibility
To qualify, the child/young adult must be between the ages of one and 21 and:- must reside in the state of Maryland when enrolled;
- must have a current Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, as defined in the DSM 5, which is confirmed by an evidence-based evaluation tool;
- must have either an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) with at least 15 hours per week of special education and related services or Individualized Family Services Plan (IFSP); and,
- must not be enrolled in any other Medicaid Home and Community Based (HCBS) Waiver; however they can be enrolled in another Medicaid program, such as receiving services from REM Program.
- Medical eligibility:
- The child/young adult must meet an institutional level of care for Intermediate Care Facilities for individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF- ID) and choose to receive Autism Waiver services as an alternative.
